Using Microsoft FrontPage After FrontPage Extensions Retirement
Support for Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions was retired in December 2020. Websites that previously relied on FrontPage Server Extensions can no longer be published directly from FrontPage using the extension-based publishing feature.
You can continue using Microsoft FrontPage to edit your website. However, you must transfer the website files between your computer and the ActionWeb server using FTP.
Set Up SFTP Access
Follow the instructions in Setting Up FTP Access to create or obtain your FTP login information.
Although our documentation may use the general term “FTP,†ActionWeb provides secure file transfer access using the SFTP protocol.
The FTP client built into Microsoft FrontPage does not support SFTP and cannot connect to the ActionWeb server. You will need to use a separate file-transfer application that supports SFTP. One popular free option that supports SFTP is
Filezilla.
Editing Your Website With FrontPage
Use the following process to continue maintaining your website:
- Connect to your ActionWeb hosting account with an SFTP-compatible file-transfer application.
- Download your website files from the web server to a folder on your computer.
- Open the local website folder in Microsoft FrontPage.
- Make and save your changes in FrontPage.
- Use the SFTP application to upload the changed files back to the web server.
Before making significant changes, download a complete copy of your website and keep it as a backup.
Important Considerations
Features that specifically require FrontPage Server Extensions will no longer function. This may include FrontPage-generated forms, counters, search components, and other server-side FrontPage components.
Standard website files—including HTML pages, images, stylesheets, JavaScript files, and other static content—can still be edited in FrontPage and transferred using SFTP.
